Portraits Today Studios is a locally owned and operated portrait studio here in Olathe, Kansas. And we like to think of ourselves as your neighborhood portrait studio. We’ve had a fun couple of weeks, like most of you, what with the 4th of July and all. We thought we would bring you some of the highlights from the last few days…

We do quite a few business head shots for professionals of all kinds here at PTS. Realtors use our services quite a bit for this purpose as do people in the corporate world and those that need a professional head shot for web purposes.

It should be obvious that we would do a lot of family photography here, too. After all, Olathe and Kansas City are completely family friendly, right?

And oh boy, do we photograph kids. Kids of all shapes, sizes and dispositions. Many are happy to see us. Others, well, not so much. But the joy they bring to our faces….and apparently to your faces, too. Children’s photography is what keeps us going, quite frankly. It keeps us young…and that’s never a bad thing.

Baby photography. It’s competitive. It’s exhausting. And it’s fun! You have many choices in Kansas City for baby photography. There are the more expensive boutique photographers. And then you have the national chains like Kiddie Kandids and JC Penny and whomever. We’d love for your to give us a chance. You should check out our Baby’s First Year Photo Club.

Chris loves sports photography! That’s how he got his start. And he worked his way up to getting the chance to photograph the Washington Freedom women’s soccer team when Mia Hamm and Pretinia were on the squad. It was great fun! If your child participates in sports or dance won’t you recommend us to their coach or league?

And of course we love to have special events here at Portraits Today Studios. Currently, we have Dog Days of Summer going on where we are featuring our pet photography at a discounted rate and having a fun contest. Through out the year we also hold Portraits in the Park, Princess & Fairies Portraits, Firefighter Portraits and Bedtime Stories With Santa. We’re always open for a new idea, too!

Dance Photography

A few weeks back we had the opportunity to do a some dance photography for Spotlight Dance Academy down in Ottawa, Kansas. If you live down that way I highly recommend Mallory. She has a warm heart and the kids seem to really enjoy her. At any rate, we wanted to share some of the dance portraits we took that day.

Introducing Melissa Nickerson to PTS Mobile Photography

Portraits Today Studios has always been willing to leave the studio to take great pictures. But now we have PTS Mobile Photography. Heading up our mobile photography is Melissa Nickerson. So we thought we would take a minute to introduce you to her.

Melissa comes to us as a former employee of The Picture People in Independence, MO and a graduate of Central Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Photography, Summa cum Laude. Her customer service skills are well known and her photography is top notch. We are very excited here at Portraits Today Studios that Melissa has chosen to help us grow our business both in the studio and in the day cares, gyms and dance studios of Kansas City.

If you are a child care center or sports league or martial arts studio or dance studio then Melissa is the person to contact to inquire about our location photography services. Kansas City Sports Photography

Portraits Today Studios has a division called Kansas City Sports and Dance Photography. It’s really a way for us to get to hang out with young people and watch a little sports. Chris, the owner, is a basketball and soccer junkie. So when he received an email from Kansas City’s Southwest Early College Campus (formerly Southwest High School) to come out and take some photographs of the men’s and women’s basketball teams he said “Sure!”

The way we handle sports photography may be a little different than what you are used to. We do the traditional photo shoots like everyone else. After all, tradition is tradition because it works. So on this particular page you will see some of our traditional shots. (A young man in the triple threat position.)

But we also like to play around a little bit, too. (Aren’t sports supposed to be fun?) So you will see a posed shot of a young man with two balls on his shoulders. And then we’ll usually ask…if we haven’t been asked several times already…to do some posed sports action portraits.

The trick to sports action photography is being ready. Timing (the photographer) and speed (the camera) are key. Portraits Today Studios has several techniques, depending on the sport, to get great posed action portraits. With soccer it’s different than with baseball and so forth.

And, of course, we do the standard team pictures. Listen, these young people will grow up to be older one day. And with time their athletic abilities will slip through there hands like it has for all of us who are older. Looking back at your team and your abilities helps keep us all young. Having a photo record of your coach who said that one thing that kept you out of trouble or helped you excel in life is a great memento to help these young people to “pay it forward.”

Thank you to all the great paid and volunteer coaches across America. No matter the sport, the kids will remember the positive words you share. The discipline you instill and the teamwork you preach will become ingrained in those that choose to embrace the concepts. And success depends on discipline and teamwork.

Sports Photography Kansas City

Sports photography is where Chris got his start. And it still brings a real smile to his face when he does sports photography for Kansas City kids. It’s fun to play with the images for the athletes. Dance photography. Cheer. Football, baseball, soccer, tennis, swimming and track. LAX and ice hockey are a lot of fun, too. Though photographing hockey usually leads to cold fingers and toes!

Kansas City Sports and Dance Photography is a consistently growing aspect of our business here at Portraits Today Studios. Tired of the same old poses, some parents choose to forgo the “photo days” that they are given and bring their athletes and ballerinas in to our portrait studios.

This young lady was fun to work with. She acted older than she really is and took direction well. Isn’t she beautiful?

It’s so fun when our subjects will play along with us for their portraits. These dance pictures really bring out the feeling of dance and the endless practice it takes to perfect the art.

Olathe Youth Baseball City Championship

I have emailed your coach the password.

Last night I had the privilege to photograph the Olathe City Championship baseball game between the Westside Sluggers and the Midwest Tornados. After a hard fought game by both teams the Tornados came away with the championship. But the info I got is that both teams had an outstanding season.

Portraits Today Studios sponsors the Westside Sluggers baseball team and so we were there to provide professional sports photography to them for the Olathe championships. We all grow up loving baseball. I wish I had had a photographer take action photos of me that would spark memories all these years later. (One did when I was a soccer goalie. I was making a great stop and every time I see the photo it brings a smile to my face!)

Sports Photography: The Tour of Lawrence

My sixteen year old and I were wandering around Lawrence on Sunday and discoverd the Tour of Lawrence up on the campus of the University of Kansas. So we ran half way down Mr. Oread and got my trusty Canon. I love action shots. And I love to blend in motion blur. So I hope you enjoy this shot. I just love it.

What does this have to do with portraiture? Well, nothing frankly. I just like it and thought I would share this photograph. There was a time in my professional photography career when action/sports were 95% of my photography business. It’s fun to do every once in a while!
